E is written in TASM, and source is included with the distribution. Commands derive in part from WordStar (the WordStar Diamond), plus a number of alt-key combos.

E edits file sizes up to available memory, and has a variety of features:

It also has a macro capability. You can attach batch files to E F-keys, and have E shell to DOS, run the batch file on the text being edited, then reload the text, allowing you to create filters to perform more complex operations.

The major limitation of E is that lines are silently truncated at column 80 because of the way text is stored in memory. Another limitation is that screen size is hard-coded at 25x80.
