As a long-time IBM mainframe applications and systems programmer, I am biased in favour of text editors that do not require removing one's hands from the keyboard to perform editing operations, but also against cryptic key combination "commands". :-)
My very favourite text editor is Xedit. On Linux I prefer X2 (the programmer's editor). Other editors I have used:
- Edgar - VM/CMS
- ISPF/PDF - z/OS
- Roscoe - MVS
- nano - Linux
- Kate - Linux/KDE
- Lexx - VM/CMS
- yudit - Linux
- wordpad - Windows
- notepad - Windows

Thanks Leslie. By way, I noticed our entry on ROSCOE is pretty lean. If you have the time or inclination, why don't you tell us a bit about it? RonPerrella
