Hex editors used primarily to edit binary data. The data being edited is normally displayed Hexadecimal, but may be in Octal, Binary, or other representations.

Sometimes, ordinary text editors offer a hex editing mode. In fact, there's a utility from FourmiLab?.ch called XD that you can use to augment any text editor.
