A simple editor inspired by the ease-of-use of Pico. But it has many more features than Pico: undo/redo, line numbers, syntax coloring, selecting text by holding Shift, multiple buffers, to name a few. And its interface has translations to more than fifteen languages.

Authors: Chris Allegretta, David Lawrence Ramsey, Benno Schulenberg
 Homepage: http://www.nano-editor.org/
 Family: TinyEditors
 License: GPL version 3
 Platform: Linux, BSDs, Haiku

It also has a compile-time option to leave out all unnecessary features, making the executable as small as possible (see TinyEditors).

Nano was written because Pico had a license restriction that prevented it from being distributed with Debian Linux. In 2001 nano became part of the GNU project.
