Screed was the Edinburgh Regional Computer Center's screen editor. At one point there was a suggestion to standardise the whole of the UK on this editor! The screen editor had the ability to recursively invoke the Ecce editor (qv) for those die-hards who were not comfortable with full-screen editing. Much of Screed's development was focused around making cursor-addressible screen updates over the UK's X25 network with its unreasonably complicated system of PADs (terminal servers) which tried to line-buffer locally and often got it wrong.
