Blake McBride picked up Tom Almy's source, made updates, and made it 64 bit compatible. It processes a page of text (delimited by Form Feed characters) at a time, random access within a page, sequentially through pages. It formed the basis for the Emacs editor. Emacs was originally a set of Editing MACroS? for TECO, written by Richard M. Stallman, and implemented on the ITS system running on a DEC-10 machine at MIT. RSTS/E and VAX/VMS used to come with a copy installed. That's why I put it in the DecFamily of editors. However, it probably belongs in a stream editors family. -RonPerella? It was developed at MIT, but implemented on DEC systems, and was available for PDP and VAX machines from DECUS, the DEC User's Group. Since it was essentially only used on DEC systems, the DEC family is an appropriate place. A macro called VTEdit enabled TECO to be used as a full screen editor on an ANSI or VT52-compatible video terminal. On RT-11, TECO supported the GT-40 video display for full screen editing. TECO was known for a syntax that strongly resembled line noise, such as this program to sort lines in a list: [1 J^P$L$$ J <.-Z; .,(S,$ -D .)FX1 @F^B $K :L I $ G1 L>$$ (where ^B means ‘Control-B’ (ASCII 0000010) and $ is actually an alt or escape (ASCII 0011011) character). --DMcCunney |
