The P-System was developed at the University of California at San Diego as a portable environment bale to be brought up on many platforms. Among others, it was available for the Apple II and the early IBM PC as an alternative to the OS's bundled with those machines. It was also used by IBM as the OS for their DisplayWriter? dedicated word processor.

P-system programming was done in Niklaus Wirth's Pascal language. Code compiled to "p-code", which was interpreted and executed by the P-System virtual machine. the P-system pioneered the approach later taken by Sun's Java language.
