In some cases, the Mode of the Buffer can be such that the contents are not, in fact, file contents but things such as directory listings, program compiler listings, shell sessions, or even email. The mode of the buffer allows specialized MacroLanguage and KeyBinding to be executed to treat such data differently from ordinary files.
GnuEmacs and XEDIT are two TextEditors that do this sort of manipulation.
