Unix Make is a program used to build programs by compiling parts in the order of their dependencies. Dependencies are specified in a makefile.
Unix Make Family:
It was originally written by StuFeldman (now at IBM).

- Dmake - Distributed make
- GnuMake - Gnu open source version of make

- NMAKE - (microsoft) - Microsoft Program Maintenance Utility
- nmake - (lucent) - Alcatel-Lucent nmake Product Builder
- Rake - Make build system written in Ruby
- redo - Open source top-down software build system
- Scons - Make replacement written in Python
- Shake - Build system library written in Haskell
- smake (symantec) - make utility included with Symantec C/C++
- tup - Open source file based build system for Linux, OSX, and Windows.
