This is the idea that a text editor should allow the user to operate in multiple independent windows. Each window generally has a Buffer that contains the contents of a File. SplitWindows are used primarily in non=GUI environments to simulate multiple windows. Vertically split windows are useful when comparing different versions of files that line-up visually. Windows can be used to hold ModalBuffers
