TextMode refers to the mode of the display being used to text edit. A VT100 terminal, for instance, is always in TextMode. An IBM PC can switch usually from TextMode to GraphicsMode and back. A Mac is always in GraphicsMode. TextMode editors are familiar to those of us who "grew up" with dumb and smart terminals.
