It was considered to be an influence in the development of markup languages such as SGML. Scribe was the result of a 1980 doctoral thesis by Brian Reid at Carnegie Mellon University, and intended to address limitations in the Digital Equipment Corporation RUNOFF formatter. Rights to it were sold to a company called Unilogic, Ltd., who offered it as a commercial product.

Reid received the Association for Computing Machinery's Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1982 for his work on Scribe.
